Happy Easter! We are hoping the Easter Bunny visits our classroom this weekend! 🙂

We had a wonderful time at the Frauenthal Theater this week with the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra.  We learned about how music moves, and we were able to listen to, sing with, and play recorders with the orchestra.  The seats were filled with 4th graders on their recorders!

We swam at the Aquatic Center today!  We will swim again two more times in the coming weeks.  Look in the important dates section below.

In reading this week we worked on revising any thinking and interpreting we did as we read to be sure that we thought of the theme in terms of the entire text and the choices the author made.  We practiced with poetry first and are working on our historical fiction novels we are reading.  We also looked up some images from the era that our books were written about in order to help us envision what is happening.  Having background knowledge about a particular era is important when reading historical fiction.

In writing we are beginning our unit on literary essays.  We began by “reading with a pencil.”  We have three different short stories we are reading very closely to analyze each and every word.

In math we compared decimals, worked on money word problems, and added and subtracting tenths and hudredths.  We took the online test, and the final test will be Monday.

Hopefully your child has talked about Market Day with you and has discussed what he or she would like to make.  As each situation is different, I really need parental help with this project at this point.  By Monday your child should know what to make.  Please keep within the guidelines of spending no more than $8 on supplies and make no more that 12 -15 items.  The difficult part for them to understand is cost per item and that nothing is free!  (Just because Mom had flour in the house already, doesn’t mean it’s free 🙂 )  We will talk more about specifics and changes can be made as the month goes on, but your child should have an idea of what to make by Monday.  Save your receipts or write the amounts on the sheet provided.

Reminder:  Whenever we have a filed trip or a half day, you can order a Lunch To Go from food service.  The student will be charged from their account.  The form is available from the office, by emailing me, or online, but it must be turned in at least one day before the event.  The Lunch to Go includes:  EZ-Jammer (soy), cheese stick, bagged carrots, muffin, and juice.  We have a few trips between now and the end of the year that require a cold lunch, so remember that you have this option.
