Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  There was a lot of green around here, and I think I saw a few leprechauns today too! 🙂  We followed the leprechauns through a scavenger hunt of information using our iPads and a QR Reader.  Ask you child what they learned about the holiday.

In reading this week we began our historical fiction book clubs.  Each group of 3 -5 students  is reading a book set with an era of U.S. history.  We discussed how the beginning of a historical fiction book is so important for gathering the who, what, when, where, etc. as well as getting a feel for the mood.  Very soon in the book they will sense that “trouble is brewing,” and we looked for hints from the author.  We also created timelines for our characters and looked to see how the historical timelines intertwined.

In writing we are finishing the final copies of our American Revolution books. This project will take some time, as we are creating text features to go along with our chapters.

In math we learned how to multiply fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by mixed numbers.  We actually learned a couple of ways to do complete this, and gave them nicknames.  We then looked briefly at adding and subtracting time where we had to regroup hours into minutes, or days into weeks.  We took the practice test and reviewed today for the final test on Monday.

In social studies we discussed the characteristics of a Republic and a constitutional government.  The class did a great job with these difficult concepts.
